Question: Changing careers…looking into Cisco networking due to the demand for those working in the computer field?
I would rather work with networking and hardware then concentrating on the programming and software. Any suggestions? I plan on going to the local tech college and gettng an A.S. computer networking and obtaining various certificates that would allow me to take the Cisco exams. I would like to work my self up to be considered a network engineer.
First hand experience (both positive and negative) is greatly appreciated.

Okay, most employers want both a 4-year degree and/or equivalent work experience with Cisco networking to start. Few places offer on-the-job training. You need more than just a Cisco CCNA certificate.
If you get a CCIE, you are gold. Few people qualify for the CCIE, so don’t think about that just yet.

I would highly recommend getting a basic Cisco cert, such as a CCNA, and then focusing on Cisco’s Voice certification track. Cisco voice engineers are in high demand, and will likely continue to be in high demand, for setting up VoIP implementations, QoS and other IP Communications related activities.
