Installing Cisco Security Device Manager (SDM) Lab – Part 1 of 2 If you’re studying for the CCNA Security exam, you will need to become very familiar with Cisco’s Router and Security Device Manager (SDM). This lesson covers the installation and setup of SDM. SDM is a Web-based device-management tool for Cisco routers that can improve the productivity of network managers, simplify router deployments, and help troubleshoot complex network and VPN connectivity issues. Cisco SDM supports a wide range of Cisco IOS Software releases and is available free of charge on Cisco router models from Cisco 830 Series to Cisco 7301. It ships preinstalled on all new Cisco 850 Series, Cisco 870 Series, Cisco 1800 Series, Cisco 2800 Series, and Cisco 3800 Series integrated services routers. Installing and running Cisco Security Device Manager is a fairly straight forward process. You will need to be aware of a few issue though: 1) You will need to configure your router to allow SDM to manage it 2) If you want to run SDM locally, you will need to make sure that your Java, firewall, and browser settings are adjusted as needed. You will also need to be running Windows. 3) If you want to run SDM from the router, you will need to make sure that you have sufficient storage on the router to install the needed SDM files.

Question: In network inventories, how could you differentiate btween voice and data devices when using only Cisco boxes?
As configuration items, all Cisco boxes fall under data yet there is a good amount configured or working as if they were voice. What difference can I stress to make them show only voice or only data accordingly?

There is no difference you can “stress” on. Take a router for example – routers are decidedly data devices… unless you’re using them to terminate POTS lines, in which case they are voice devices.

Hence the term “converged network”. VoIP is, in fact, just data packets… they just get reassembled by phones instead of computers.

well cisco deals mostly with corprations were talking networtks of 100 plus computers kinda thing

schools hospitals government offices etc…….

linksys however is also owned by cisco so you will notice all linksys wireless routers say cisco on them

I’m very interested in doing a CNNA course or a similar Microsoft Certified course before I go to university.

What is the total cost of doing a CCNA in the UK? I’ve heard that the exams are about £100 each and there are 5 of them…?

Also, do you have to be part of an academy / be taught the CCNA from a qualified person/body, or can you self study for it and take the exams as and when you are ready?

CCNA is the entry level certification for Cisco and you can self study and just take the test when you’re ready.
I think you can take it as one test or as two separate ones.
I believe it’s valid for 3 years, then you need to update it.
If you’re new to the computer / networking field, Cisco certs are probably not much use to you. The Microsoft ones may be better. Depends where your interests lie.
