If we treat the router connected to your broadband modem as your first router, then you need to connect your 2nd router as a hub only. To do this, you should connect your first router to your second router via the LAN ports, not the WAN port.

For example, if your routers have 1 WAN port and 4 LAN ports (as most do), then run a cable out of port 4 on your first router, to port 4 on your second router.

Most people tend to run a cable from a LAN port on their first router to the WAN port on the second…which means you’d have to configure the second router to do all sorts of complex bridging, etc.

If you connect it up the way i’ve said, then any PC connected to either router will only get its IP address from the first router, the second router will be acting as a simple network hub. By the way, you could actually remove the second router and replace it with a hub/switch, something like the $ 25 Edimax ES-550M.

Security Camera to Network Router to record?

Question: Security Camera to Network Router to record?
I bassicly am looking for a cheap but good single security camera that can be connected RJ45 to connect to an ATT uverse router and save the video to a hard drive in my computer that is always on and connected to the router as well.

I’m not sure if you’ll be able to get a camera that plugs into an RJ45 but you pick up entire security systems fairly cheaply which usually include up to 4 cameras, one computer-like box that contains a hard drive running suitable software and all the cables you need and can be put together by a home user. Try looking for Swann and Watchguard brands.

The one we have can be connected to our network and when we have it set up to do so can be accessed across the internet. It can be a bit fiddly setting things up properly in your modem/router but that depends on how easy your router is to manage. One that we used was fairly simple and one was a pain in the rear end and I never figured it out. Also, you should permanently assign a local IP address to your security system which on ours can be done on the system itself and saves the problem of forgetting to permanently assign it through the router if we have to reset the router to factory defaults any time or change modems.

To access it via the internet, you may need a domain name (I think with some ISPs you can use your external IP address and just point it at the system) and we went to dyndns.org to get ours for free. The only downside of the free name is that if the name hasn’t been accessed within a certain time frame, I get an email mentioning this fact and asking me to follow a link if we still want the name. I get an email like that about every three weeks when we aren’t accessing our system from outside our network and it’s an extremely trivial downside. Takes me all of about 10-15 seconds to deal with it each time. If you prefer, you can pay a small yearly sum and never have to deal with those emails and be sure of keeping your name.

I’ve just tried going to dyndns.org to give you details of getting a free name but it keeps redirecting me to dyn.com/dns/ where I can’t find information about it. I’ve done some heavy googling and finally came up with this as a place to get a dyndns.org name:

http://free.domain.name/en.html

Go down to the bottom of the page and you can choose dyndns.org from the dropdown list.

Visit your electronic stores to see what they have. I often see them advertised in their catalogues. They’ll also be able to tell you if what you want is available and where to get it or if you’ll need to buy a system.
