My boyfriend just bought me a Acer Aspire One laptop, and my mom has a EMachine Desktop Computer and I was wondering how to connect my laptop to her computer’s network without a router. What kind of cables do I need to get to make it work? Any help would be appreciated! :)

If You want to connect 2 PC or 2 laptops or PC to laptop all You need is crossover ethernet cable (RJ45).

Then You plug it into ethernet port in both devices.

You will have access then to shared folder on the both computers. If You want have access to other devices in the network then You need to plug new laptop to router / switch. Depends what You have.

If this network will be only for those 2 devices, this one cable connection will be enough. You can also make (in windows for example) new network, just click wizard in control panel.

Good luck.

Question: How do I connect my old desktop to my laptop without using a network/router?
The old one has Windows ME and the new one has Windows XP. Both have network/ethernet cards. I can’t use the network here to connect the two, so I would like a direct option. So what do I need to do this and how do I do it? Someone said something about using the USB ports, but provided no info.

Buy an ethernet cable ($ 2) and put one end into the desktop and the other to the laptop, they are now connected on a network.

How can I direct connect my laptop to my desktop computer (with a network or firewire cable) without a router?

Question: How can I direct connect my laptop to my desktop computer (with a network or firewire cable) without a router?
My CD burner gave out on my desktop. I have files there that I would like to burn to a CD using my laptop’s burner. How can I directly connect them both to make this work without going through the “network router” headache?

Answer:

Answer by GTB
There is no more or less headache if you already have a network with a router.

First enable share on the laptop burner so it can be shared. Not all pcs or configurations will permit this – and if so you have to use a second plan.

Second, on laptop, find its LAN IP address (command prompt ipconfig command, let’s say herein the LAN IP is 192.168.1.52).

Third, on desktop, open web browser and enter \192.168.1.52 in address bar and hit enter; you will see all shared devices on lap top. If you see cd burner you are there

You may need to transfer files from desktop to laptop to do the cd burn operation however.
